The holiday had began in late May, but my little STAR's learning and engagement with external therapy professionals continue.
This is the only hope that we have to compensate his lack in academic learnings and also continuous improvement on the sensory integration aspect of development as he journey on with autism focus structure learning in EIP.
Aside from attending therapy sessions in OT, SLT & special education, Fabian favourite pass time at home revolves around watching DVD on SID The Kid Scientist which he has 3 disc to his collection now, the dvd comes with English subtitle and good video modelling in various aspect of language, critical thinking, expressive & receptive interaction, singing etc. If not watching DVD or TV, he will also be playing with his favourite transport & doll house, though he still lack imaginative play but we have observed that he is at least less rigid at play than before, only regret is that both his parents are working and left only night or weekend to engage him and where opportunity arises to elevate his learning in this focus area. He had also been very self empowered during the school holidays in working by himself, this has forced us to review his tasks more often than before and also pushing me to create and integrate more worksheets to satisfy his craving for work. He had completed almost about 90 worksheets in various academic learning that he had acquired from EIP & therapists for special needs. His writing has improved but we are also trying to make him write neatly, tighter and consistently whenever we are able to supervise him to check and asking him to redo etc...
Catching up with cousins is the only circle time that we seek to open his social skill and develop his confident to interact through practise and playing together with other children other than his elder sister. Child care center is also another means of integrating him in the normal environment socially but very much depend on the center teachers extra miles effort to stand by him, which can be taxing and difficult at times to leverage duties with other neuro-typical kids. My little STAR is fortunate to have stayed until this far with MMI near our place since Mar 2010 and the teachers are quite understandng and supportive of him.
June is also a month that father feel rewarded seeing his little STAR grows & learns as the family adventure on with him, invited my sister family over to have another great moment for the kids together. My sister bought a cake for tea break while I ordered pizza & KFC, not forgetting home made dumpling for dinners. Fabian has also started to get interested on the golf game at WII, teaches him to play and learn is a sure joy of living.
Taking photos and dinners together are some ritual that help us renew & strengthen our family bonding toegther. Returning to lower seletar reservior after dinner and have a walk is another ways of recalling the difficult time that we have walk through before, and always the greatest memories that we always will have in our mind.
Results of Fabian educational placement assessment were unfolded in late June, we were truely delighted with the outcome and celebrate his little success with gratitude, kudos to all his teachers who have taken him and also those external therapy professionals strong support. This will not be possible without their believe and faith in him. At least he still stands a fighting chance of registering for a place in PLS, the joy derive from this opportunity is beyond measure. Where there is great love and care, there are always have a chance to make miracle.
We now look forward to Term 3 opening & work even more harder and collaborating even more closer with the SpEd Team in the coming months to elevate his success rate of making it pass the in take assessment at PLS. All things worth doing are worth doing well.
His last Saturday activities before the term starts come in the form of schedule which incuded 1 ST & WND back to back with half an hours lunch break. Then is the usual hair cut time at barber shop in our neighbourhood, the malay barber uncle told me he is getting better now, no different from a normal child, his comment make my day. But still will not be hesitate to share and tell others that he is special when opportunity arises to promote awareness. The hair cut was not in the schedule but merely adhoc for him by hinting "Fabian hair is long, need to go... hair cut at ...barber" and then off I go.
The little STAR has also picked up a new game call Angry Bird in mummy's iphone, aside from watching video taken at OT/work by myself/indoor playground, this has become another motivator whenever he sees us come home, he will ask for our smart phone and we will demand him to request properly in full sentence before we granted him. We end the last holiday weekend Saturday with a family dinner at Sakura Internatioal Buffet to give thanks to Fabian on his inch stone progress and achievement.
June month was indeed juicy and fruitful, I am looking forward to another fulfilling month in July as we adventure on with him.
