The day before the new school term starts for his EIP, I decided to drive my little STAR for a hair cut without telling him before hand. I picked him up from child care at 5pm and during our journey back in the car, hint him that his hair is long, lets go hair cut. As we reach the place outside the barber shop, point to him the spinning light trade mark to indicate barber shop inside and transit him in, he was a bit shy/hesitant at first but slowly and surely he moved in with me. The barber was taking his late lunch or early dinner then, understand that he was busy with many students seeking hair cut to ready for the new school term just like our little STAR. Get him to sit on chair and wait, & while waiting pass him a packet of sea weed his favourite snack to go along. The hair cutting process was as smooth as normal, give him a lot of praise and very thankful that he manage another positive out come. I got him to ask barber "How much", pass him $$$ to pay barber for the good cutting, said thank you and bid barber good bye!
This is his 3rd and last year of EIP, really looking forward to another great learning journey. The first week of his new school term ended on a positive note, he was joyful to see his 3 school friends from last term and 1 new friend who has also joined to make the group of 5 in class. The teachers are also playing their critical part and putting their worth while work to make an impact for the children under their care. Hopeful for a frutiful and fulfilling TERM.
Sensory integration may be the most difficult aspect of autism to understand, but it is arguably the most critical. When my little STAR first started his OT, he was assessed to have poor gross motor and attention which affects his vestibular and proprioceptive senses. His body awareness with space is almost none exist. Today we are very delighted to see him climbing up and down, sliding down at his own free will in the mega gym at down town East Kids Explorer.
We are also glad that the many children and loud noises do not hinder his engagement to explore the entire gym area. On the other hand, it is work in progress with his therapy on his motor planning in better organize sequence of task processing to maximize his learning potential.
His progress with other therapists/special educators in speech, literacy, numeric, writing and drawing has also making inch stone achievement too & at present joining his K2 peers at MMI child care when there is no EIP to let him continue to generalize his skill learn and integrate with other children in a natural environment.
